Investigating Sundance Catalog's newest arrivals...

Wednesday, March 29, 2017

The Elettra Tee ($78).
With: Necklace (I LOVE this!) | Bracelet | Ring | Earrings

Since my move from Manhattan to Brooklyn there's been one catalog noticeably missing from my mailbox: Sundance Catalog! It took a little while to get everything sorted out, but finally the latest Spring arrivals mailer was in my box this past weekend. And I'm so glad because I feel like I'd been missing out on their beautiful new arrivals.

There are so many things I love about Sundance Catalog, too many to name really. But a few of those favorite things are their attention to detail in things like embroidery and pattern placement -- how gorgeous is the Elettra Tee ($78) above? -- wonderful material choices and well-layered outfits that I could easily copy.

This time around I'm also adoring their models!! I covet this model's infectious personality. What a smile she has! It certainly makes me want to take a closer look at their clothing...

11 Spring outfits I can't wait to try...

Cold weather has kept me from rocking this outfit outside, but not for much longer! (I hope.)
Jacket | Dress | Bag | Shoes (old, similar)

Fall my be my favorite clothing season, but early Spring in New York City runs a close second for all of its cheery layering potential. Temperatures won't climb to warmth until late April at the earliest so these next 30 days or so are spent finding ways to dress for chilly outdoors, overheated subways and office buildings, and everything in-between.

Inside, 10 more outfits I'm excited to wear this early Spring...

Congratulations to...

Weekend good reads: Macy's looks to customization and a richer assortment via the Wall Street Journal

Saturday, March 25, 2017

Jeff Gennette, Macy’s new CEO, at the department store’s flagship location in
Manhattan’s Herald Square on March 21.
photo by Michael Rubenstein for the Wall Street Journal

If you enjoy reading about the business side of fashion as I do, a Wall Street Journal subscription is a must! This week the WSJ ran an article about Macy's new CEO Jeff Gennette and his plans to reinvigorate the struggling department store. As a NYC native who grew up shopping at the Herald Square store on occasion, it saddens me to see how far this once-great store has fallen.

The article however gives me hope. It has some great ideas from new CEO Gennette, who is thinking of ways to customize the consumer experience and reinvesting in better materials, fewer brands, and a better overall product assortment.

From the article:
"To boost sales of full-price merchandise, Mr. Gennette plans to add new brands and designers, while improving the materials and construction of some lines and varying the mix of items more. He pointed to Macy’s private label INC brand, which has raised prices around 8% on average after adding embellishments such as additional trim and better-quality fabrics."

One very interesting stat in the article was that 10% of Macy's 43 million customers account for a whopping 50% of its total sales. WOW. There is clearly a lot of room to improve there and who knew that so few people could keep a retailer afloat? It also makes me think of this MSN slideshow I saw earlier this week, about the disorganization running rampant at dying stores.

There's also plenty of warnings here about the peril of department stores, which makes me think of non-luxury department stores I love like Nordstrom and Anthropologie & Co. (I say non-luxury because luxury department stores are mostly doing just fine, especially at the highest end while midrange stores continue to struggle.)

The full article is available to subscribers of the WSJ, and for a limited time for free here.

What are your thoughts on this article?

How I Save Money on Shoes by Shopping at Amazon

Thursday, March 23, 2017

How savvy is your shoe shopping?
With Amazon, you can keep extra cash in your pockets on popular shoe styles like the Huxley

If you want to learn how to buy the shoes you love and save money, you've come to the right place. I love shoes and each season I like to give my wardrobe a refresh by purchasing new pairs of shoes. It's an easy way to breathe new life into an outfit or update to fit the changing trends and styles.

I'm not a big believer in things like shopping bans because from what I've seen, they often lead to overspending afterwards. Depriving yourself is not healthy. However, there are ways that you can be savvy with your money and get what you need or want and still have extra cash in your pockets! Who doesn't love having extra cash on-hand?

To make this year the best shopping year of your life, I want to help you find ways to get the things you love for less. In this post we'll be talking about why you should always be checking Amazon before you buy a pair of shoes. You could be leaving a lot of money on the table if you're not!

Get your shopping on with Anthro's sale, now an extra 25% off!!

Looking for the perfect Easter or Passover dress?
It might just be the Winningham Lace Dress (now $120), which is now an extra 25% off!
Here's one of my outfit ideas for the dress. (It runs small through the hips, I sized up.)

Note: If you're looking for the post about how I save money on shoes via Amazon, it will go back live early this afternoon!

Anthropologie didn't wait long to launch a new promotion! All sale items are now extra 25% off at Anthro for a limited time...which probably means now through Sunday.

Inside, 10 things I'm loving with the extra % off...

Spring is in Full Bloom at Madewell!

Madewell's Spring collection: comfy, wearable, flattering and highly cute!

It's a toss-up for who has the cutest Spring line this year, but Madewell has to be near the top of the list! Their Spring collection is full of cheery, flattering, easy-to-wear delights that have me clamoring for more. I recently teamed up with them to shoot some Spring OOTDs which I'm very excited to share with you next week or the week after, but in the meantime let's take a look at some of the items on my Madewell wishlist...

Shop Anthropologie's April 2017 new arrivals first

Tuesday, March 21, 2017

Shop Anthropologie's new arrivals before they officially debut on the website.

Anthropologie sent out a first dibs link for April's new arrivals earlier today. I meant to have this post up around 11 AM but a burst pipe in our master bathroom scuttled those plans. I'm still drying stuff but Anthropologie wants us to pretend like we're near the beach.

Fine with me, but I'm staying away from all water right now. Inside, thoughts...

Costa Rica 2017 Recap: OOTDs

Enjoying sunset over the Pacific Ocean and each other, on the vacation of our dreams in Costa Rica.

Each morning my boyfriend and I wake up and say, "Let's go back to Costa Rica!" We're not yet at the point financially where it's possible to go on extended trips without our work suffering but our photo allow us to relive the trip often. Although we were only in the Papagayo Bay for a week, we made a lifetime of memories! (Cheesy but true.)

What does one wear while in the Papagayo Bay? Aside from my activity clothing which mostly consisted of Lululemon's Run Times Short ($58) and Energy Bra ($48) -- see those on me here at the mud baths! -- beach vacation was a time to enjoy the flowy and the lightweight.

Inside, some of my outfits from the trip...

Costa Rica 2017 Recap: Memories and Adventures from our trip

Monday, March 20, 2017

BF strolls along the pristine beach at our hotel.

Each winter, my boyfriend and I plan a getaway with three criteria: 1 | there must be a beach; 2 | it must be warm and 3 | it should be all-inclusive. My boyfriend is awesome enough to get me the trip as a birthday/Valentine's Day present. I'm a lucky girl!! Though I'd been to Costa Rica twice already my boyfriend had never been and it quickly rose to the top of our list. Together, we explored an area of the country neither of us had been to before and had a magnificent, relaxing time.

Inside, come share our trip memories and adventures with us as I share what Costa Rica is like and why it should be at the top of your vacation list...

Pink is an absolute must for my warm-weather shoe repetoire. These slip-ons are so comfy!
(I use this Made in the USA cleaner to keep them looking brand new.)

Here's where I'm finding the cutest Spring pieces...

Wednesday, March 15, 2017

The Off-the-Shoulder Floral Blouse ($98) doesn't have to be worn off-shoulder, and has beautiful sleeves.

Updated with how to save 25% off your purchase!

Sometimes in shopping a store you haven't been in for awhile can turn things around, really impress you when you go back in. That's the way I've been feeling about White House Black Market lately! I first heard of the brand in 2005 or so when a former roommate of mine received a Fall mailer from them and I fell in love with literally every outfit in the short flyer! In the years since my interest in the brand had waned as their quality sank to disappointing levels and the designs got increasingly stale.

But the last several times I've strolled past their NYC stores something has caught my eye in the window and invited me inside, where I've found so much to love! While most of their clothing is made from poly blend, I've noticed an increasing amount of silk, cotton, suede and leather and their Spring 2017 collection might be their cutest yet!

Inside, picks from happy vibrant clothing...

On the final night of Anthropologie's weekend extra 30% off sale promotion, there are new sale items! I'm having better luck seeing the items right now in each sale clothing section (i.e. dresses, tops, jackets, etc.) than the fresh cuts section, though that may change as the night progresses.

Checking in with LOFT's new Spring 2017 arrivals...

The Fan Lace Shift Dress ($98) comes in a beautiful shade of green (and also comes in black).

On Friday we took a look at many of the LOFT items that are 40% off right now. Believe it or not that list was hardly exhaustive to examine all of the pretties LOFT has in stock right now! This post is all about new arrivals which are full price -- at least for the time being.

With LOFT promos plentiful now is when I'm making a list for their next sitewide promo. It's a long list...

The Morgan Printed Top ($88) is perfect for tucking into shorts or skirts.
I love the fringe detail along the bottom! Here's a great IRL photo of it.

We've talked a lot about what's not going well at Anthropologie right now, but I think it'd be nice to enter the weekend chatting about what we like! I've picked up some truly beautiful items there recently that tend to get hidden on the website among the sea of otherworldy stuff.

So, this post is dedicated to clothing and accessories I've either purchased at Anthropologie recently or tried and loved, like the Morgan Printed Top ($88, above)...

Although you want find too much in the way of organic materials here, when that's the story pretty much everywhere the designs and prices at LOFT become all the more appealing!

I've found some real gems here lately. Inside, taking a look some of the cute items included in their 40% off perfectly timed styles promo, like the Primavera Swing Dress (now $42, above).

Notes from Urban Outfitters' Q4 2017 Earnings Call

Struggling to understand your people? So is Anthropologie, according to Barron's...

Is Anthropologie laughing with us or at us?
It just doesn't get its customer lately, according to Barron's.

Anthropologie parent company Urban Outfitters will hold its quarterly earnings call tomorrow and ahead of that Barron's has a pretty scathing article about the state of things with our favorite wayward retailer.

The article contains amusingly massive understatements like "Anthropologie seems to have misread consumer culture" while missing some of the greater reasons why, yet nailing the simple truth: the clothing has been too expensive lately considering the weird designs and poor quality materials.

I know this article was mentioned in the comments while I was on vacation but I wanted to give it its own post for further chatting. We'll go into deeper dissection once the quarterly call transcript becomes available, but I do wonder how Anthropologie seems to keep drifting further away from its target even as the corporate heads assure investors and analysts that they've got it right this time?

As a customer, it's disappointing. I don't find their designs to be particularly youthful or edgy -- certainly when I was 18 or even 25 this was not the way I wanted to dress -- but I am somewhat bemused that Anthro seems to keep chasing the most awful trends (cropped, off-shoulder, shapeless, etc.) while completely forgetting what made them so appealing in the first place. All it takes is reading the feedback about their clothing -- this thread is particularly startling in its bold dissent -- to know that we are not alone in our headscratching in this community. Seems like there is a loud majority asking Anthro to go back to what works!

Isn't it quite odd to anyone else that Anthropologie made its mark by producing items different from other retailers, yet seems so desperately now to want to mirror other retailers' offerings? No one is winning with that strategy, least of all loyal Anthro lovers!

You're way too young of a company to be having a midlife crisis Anthropologie. Give up trying to capture the youth you never had and be who you are -- a confident, wandering, imaginative soul who doesn't dress herself in sad sacks.

Thoughts?

What I'm Loving at Anthropologie right now
