We need to talk about the cute suede shoes at the Urban Outfitters family of stores right now

Wednesday, March 30, 2016

These Lily T-Strap Heels ($79) make me happy.

Spring 2016 is shaping up to be my best shoe season ever. Not only are block heels in this season (thank you, shoe gods!) but so are suede and colored leather, my two favorite materials. I'm dying of happiness in each store I wander into right now and I have to say that the Urban Outfitters family -- that being UO, our beloved Anthropologie and Free People too -- are killing it right now.

So many shoes I want. Inside, major porn. Hide your wallet first.

Let's take a peek at Boden's midseason sale

Lying in repose, the natural state of the well-dressed woman.

All's very quiet right now on the Anthropologie front (we'll take a look at the April lookbook later today or tomorrow) so my eye is turning some of the other retailers I like to browse, especially when they are having sales! The community has requested a post dedicated to Boden which right now is having a lovely midseason sale, with Spring clothing marked down up to 50%. No code is required for the sale -- prices are as marked.

I own a couple of Boden dresses. What I love about this brand is that most of their items come in petite, regular or tall lengths (we talls rejoice!) and they tend to have slightly more modest cuts. Great for work for women in their 30s...or women in their late 20s struggling to straddle that line between trendy young thing and 'I can't wear this to work!'.

Inside, items like the pretty Wrap Dress (now $74) above, which is 30-40% off depending on the color you choose...and shipping's free on orders of $50+ too...

Playing the Sale Guessing Game

Sunday, March 27, 2016

A well-placed tipster tells me markdowns are on the way tomorrow! It sounds like a smaller sale with no dresses included and not many, if any, further cuts. Still, it's fresh markdowns!

Inside, some confirmed markdowns on the way. Let's play the Sale Guessing Game and speculate about possible additional sale items to come....

Afternoon delight: Another great promo at Banana Republic

Thursday, March 24, 2016

Pretty Timo Weiland x Banana Republic dress, meet my closet.
Photos in this post via the BR website or their Instagram.

Banana Republic is running a super sweet promo right now! From now through April 2 you can take 40% off your online order or in-store purchase, though as usual exclusions apply. Use the code BRSPRING online.

I recently talked about some of my favorites at BR. Today I stopped into the Rockefeller Center (NYC) Banana Republic store after making my Anthropologie run and found several more delights to stock up on my spring work/casual wardrobe. And then when I got back to my office, I placed an order for some coordinating items. I don't plan on keeping everything but I did buy a bunch so I can try it all on together at home, in front of a non-retail mirror, and figure out what to keep.

Inside, what I purchased.

Anthropologie unveils a weekend promo treat!

Take an extra 25% off the Wrapped Stripe Column Dress (now $90 before the promo).

Anthropologie has unveiled its weekend treat one day early this week. For a limited time (at least through the weekend and likely into next week too) take an extra 25% off Anthropologie saleUse the code XTRAXTRA at checkout.

There is a lot of good pickings in sale right now! Items like the Arcata Patchwork Dress (now $90), Laia Shell (now $40), Twist-Front Tee (now $40) and Diamond-Cut Felt Skirt (now $170) become even more appealing with an extra 25% off.

I'll be making a stop in Anthropologie during my lunch break for sure, and probably placing a small order too. How about you?

Anthro members: Shop April's new arrivals first!

Tuesday, March 22, 2016

Anthropologie has unveiled a special April new arrivals pre-shop page for Anthro members! It's time to pore over the pretty.

After March's huge unveiling of over 100 dresses, April's page seems tiny by comparison. There are still things to love though! Among my favorites: the pretty teal embroidered overlay of the Arbor Lace Dress ($188); the fun specks of the Watercolor Dot Midi Skirt ($128); the ready for spring Nymphaea Headband ($28); the gorgeously sparkly Highwire Necklace ($88); and the pleasing components of the Pyrenees Pendant Necklace ($54).

Which item is your favorite? I'm surprised no shoes are included here, like these cute new fringed Sam Edelman sandals for instance.

Post Anthro-Day weekend Monday morning hangover prescription

Monday, March 21, 2016

Just what the doctor ordered -- cute new arrivals!
I'm in love with this Valma Tiered Tank ($68).

How did Anthro weekend treat you, community? I helped several friends (and a few former personal shopping clients) shop for new outfits and we had a great time! The vibe in the NYC Anthros I visited was festive with long lines at each store. I'm feeling a bit of a post-shopping hangover to be honest...and was cheered right up this morning by some of the cute new arrivals on Anthropologie's site.

Dear Anthropologie, dear dear Anthropologie, I look at items like the Valma Tiered Tank ($68) and fall in love not only with it, but also the necklace shown with it. Unfortunately this necklace in neither linked in the "Get the look" section nor does it appear to be online anywhere in the jewelry section. This makes me tear my hair out. You are losing an easy upsell Anthropologie, because I would order both rightthisinstant.

It's like this is your mindset:
1. Show cute top with pretty necklace.
2. ???
3. Profit!

Allow my to fill in the ??? for you -- link to the dang necklace too! Even if it's not available yet. Even if it's sold out. Help a poor shopping-hungover sister out here.

Rant aside, this cute layered top is just one of several newly added to my wishlist, oops sorry, 'registry.' Add to that the cute polka-dotted blue version of the Weekdays Layered Tank ($68), the maybe too-short Cora Clipdot Blouse ($88) and the nearly ruffled Pomona Peplum Tank ($58). So close to full ruffle. It's OK Anthropologie, you can embrace ruffles again. Ruffles are coming back big-time. Be the ruffle! We love the ruffles.

A few other cute casual things catching my eye...

A favorite of mine, though I wish they were 5" long instead of 4".
Likewise, the Pilcro Stet Chino Capris ($88) are coming in lots of fun colors this year
and appear to be a good length.

Thumbs up Anthropologie. Perfect casual skirt.

If you need a more dreamy palate cleanser, try the Calla Silk Gown ($598), the Ginger Convertible Maxi ($310, also in pink), or the Cezembre Dress ($298). Yum!

South Island Maxi Dress ($248)

Can I combine the birthday discount with the Anthro Day code?
No.

Nope, all the store employees know it's Anthro Day weekend and they are ready to give you 20% off!

- Does this promotion work on sale items?
Yes.

- Does this promotion work on furniture?
Yes, but note that you'll still pay the full $150 delivery charge.

Afternoon delight :: Fine feathery adornments

Tuesday, March 15, 2016

I am an absolute sucker for feathery adornments like the Josephine Feathered Necklace ($118)! I love the polka-dotted black feathers so very much. J.Crew had a similar necklace over the winter, which of course sold out in about two seconds. Since then I'd been thinking about that necklace...and then one day a few weeks ago while strolling through the Chelsea Market Anthropologie in NYC, I came across the Josephine Feathered Necklace ($118) in one of their jewelry cases. I was instantly smitten! And then I looked next to it, and saw the black-tipped brown version of the necklace!

It was all I could do to open my wallet and let the money go flying out. No, I thought to myself, it's in the case so it must be super expensive. My budget does not allow this right now.

So I kept walking.

And then dammit, in another case, I came across these:

The super adorbs Warbler Earrings ($58), also by Serafina. Alright, I figured, if it's in a case they're probably expensive, but probably less expensive than the necklace so let's just check on the price of these...

When I found out the earrings were only $58, I delighted! They came home with me immediately. Once home I did not find them online but this week they've finally made the website, along with other fine feathery delights like this Firebird Pendant Necklace ($78) and the coordinating Firebird Earrings ($58). I also have my eye on these cute aqua Momota Earrings ($58).

Oh, and this non-feathery but still beautiful Finix Necklace ($68). OK I'll stop now. Maybe.

Anthro's jewelry game = en pointe right now!

15 Things I Love at Banana Republic right now

Banana Republic's Cotton/Linen Peplum Dress ($158 + 30% off) has my name written all over it.
I adore the necklace they've paired with the dress here too.

My Spring 2016 closet refresh is in full swing and the next store to draw my eye is Banana Republic, which is currently running a 30% off select dresses and skirts. With work on my mind and shoes dazzling my eyes, here are 10 things I'm loving at BR right now...

A cute scalloped-edge dress ready for work, date or nite.

Playing the Sale Guessing Game

Sunday, March 13, 2016

Hello ladies! I'm on the road back to NYC at the moment and some wonderful tipsters have let me know that there is a sizable apparel markdown on the way tomorrow at Anthropologie! So while I'm traveling let's play the Sale Guessing Game and see what will be on sale...

Anthropologie brings back Trend Shops with a delightful capsule collection of...

Friday, March 11, 2016

Anthropologie takes a spin back to bohemia in its new trend shop.
The Sea Isle Skirt ($298), Embroidered Poppy Shirt Jacket ($298),
and Seamed Linen Tee ($68) are featured here.

Anthropologie is bringing its trend shops back -- hooray! This feature, which they used to do regularly pre-2009, is basically a capsule collection of some like-minded pieces. For Spring 2016 they've chosen to focus on bohemia with a shoppable preview page that's up today. Some of the items on the page, like the Sakura Maxi Dress ($368) and the Seychelles Forward Platform Wedges ($100) have already been featured on this blog.

Let's take a look at a few of the other beauties from the trend shop...

Oh. My. God. I love this dress so much!

The Petaline Midi Dress ($198) and Silverfrost Necklace ($64).
I want to wear this to every spring party I plan to attend. Think anyone will notice?

I don't know if I can handle acid-wash jeans again, but I dig this look.

The Siva Earrings ($68).

The full Bohemia Trend Shop page can be seen here. I like it! A slightly more grown-up take on bohemian than, say, Free People (whom I also love). Many of the pieces in the capsule are from designer Vivien Ramsay, who according to the email "dyes each garment in her studio overlooking the Phillipine jungle; its raw, colorful scenery inspires her one-of-a-kind raw, yet elegant creations." That sounds a little J.Crew to me but we'll go with it!

What's your favorite item?

Anthropologie's Q4 2016 results have many seeing ghosts of J.Crew

Wednesday, March 9, 2016

Anthropologie's parent company Urban Outfitters held its quarterly earnings call on Monday (March 7 2016) and also discussed its results for the fiscal year. Anthro saw 2% declines in comparable same-store sales, and profits were down due to heavy promotional pricing during the last quarter. Surprised? No you're not. The Washington Post shared its thoughts about the state of Anthropologie in this fascinating article yesterday.

The 3-second summary of the article is that Anthropologie should beware the pitfalls currently affecting J.Crew, a thought that has not gone unexpressed many times on this blog and seems to be on the mind of retail analysts. J.Crew is struggling to turn around its women's business, which had alienated its core customer by making a sharp left turn with its designs while at the same time sacrificing quality in the production process.

While J.Crew is slowly limping out of that pit it fell into, Anthropologie seems to be blindly flailing into the exact same pit. It was remarkable when Anthro managed to weather the storm of 2012 with positive results in all four fiscal quarters while every single one of its contemporaries floundered; yet somehow as other brands seem to be picking themselves up Anthropologie finds itself now falling down.

This is not all that surprising; certainly the readership here has been moaning for 2+ years about the design woes. The design team can't seem to get their finger properly on the pulse of what its customer wants and misplaced strategies about "updating designs for the modern customer" don't exactly help. All retailers are facing the issue of younger customers wanting new and fast and instant gratification and trying to reconcile that against the prices needed to make a profit. Yet nobody seems to remember that people will pay for quality and great design no matter what their age?

Anyway, here are some highlights from Ms. Halzack's WP article:

"The problems are piling up, and they have a familiar ring to them. Last May, executives said Anthropologie’s sales took a hit when it whiffed with its line-up of spring dresses: Not enough casual frocks, they said, and some instances where the team missed the mark on fabrics, silhouettes or prices. And the struggles have only continued, with the retailer saying Monday that it ended up having to resort to promotions to sell unappealing dresses and sweaters in the back half of last year. Foot traffic was also lower at its fleet of 218 stores.

On a conference call with investors, chairman Richard Hayne was blunt about what’s ailing the brand.

“Clearly, the task at hand for the Anthropologie team is to improve the apparel assortment,” Hayne said."

...

"It’s hard not to see the parallels between what’s ailing J. Crew and what’s ailing Anthropologie: Both chains are simply failing to offer shoppers the kind of clothes they are looking for. And while it was easy at first to write off Anthropologie’s stumbles as a temporary blip, a full year of unattractive merchandise in dresses — one of the chain’s most essential categories — raises questions about whether it might be slipping into a rut."

...

"It’s not all bad news for Anthropologie: The company said that sales of home products, beauty products, accessories and shoes were strong in the latest quarter. In fact, Haynes told investors he is so bullish Anthropologie’s potential as a home goods retailer that he said he could foresee a future in which clothing accounts for less than 50 percent of the store’s sales. If the store can pull off that change in the mix of the business, it may not matter so much if the apparel category goes through a soft patch."

I know we've discussed a lot of this to death already, but for the sake of leaving no stone unturned here again is my five-point manifesto for Anthropologie:

1 - Do what you do best. Classics with a slightly updated, feminine twist. No one likes wearing a box.

2 - Your ideal assortment is 20% workwear, 20% flexible workwear (meaning items that can double as both work and casual wear), 30% casual and weekendwear, 10% sleepwear, 5% fine garments and the rest can be divided up however the heck you want. Do not attempt to replicate any trends lesser stores are interpreting at a lower price point -- this is a losing battle. Pay attention to curves and busts in your designs.

3 - Quality is key among your customers. Buttons that aren't loose, zippers that zip, embellishments that stay on, items that do not fall apart on the first or second wear; fabrics that can survive washings without becoming distorted, shrinking or worse. Make it clear that you pay attention to your production process and won't accept less than excellent quality. Kudos for your return to cotton, synthetics are not bad but should be deployed sparingly.

4 - Nothing is more insulting to customers than poor customer service. Online orders should arrive nicely packaged (dresses stuffed and wrinkled into a plastic bag does not inspire spending lust), with a signed-off quality check. Shipping charges need to be rethought. Customer service should have a "I'm going to help you to the best of my abilities" approach.

5 - Inspire your customers by showing how versatile your clothing is. I love, love, SO love the individual store Instagram feeds! As well as the Anthro PS feed. More like this please.

For what it's worth I'm seeing some lovely turnaround at Anthropologie, and my wishlist is fuller than it's been in a while. Is there room for further improvement? Absolutely. But I am optimistic based on what I'm seeing.

Also, record scratch, what the heck does Mr. Hayne mean that Anthro may someday be less than 50% clothing sales???? Has he been watching the furniture industry lately?

Finally, a huge congratulations is due to Anthropologie Group CEO David McCreight, who was promoted to President of Urban Outfitters, Inc. at the end of February. Mr. McCreight takes on this new title while retaining his former position's duties. Awesome!

It's a good thing this is a year where I have some spring shoes to replace! What's your afternoon delight today?

Playing the Sale Guessing Game

Sunday, March 6, 2016

Although there were a few markdowns this past Thursday, my sale spidey senses are tingling. Is it a false alarm or the real thing? There's only one way to find out! Let's play the Sale Guessing Game...

The weekend in-store community post

Friday, March 4, 2016

I have noticed a lot of community members sharing in-store deals and spots in the comments of various posts. Inspired by the weekly Seek & Find posts started by the lovely Alexis over at J.Crew Aficionada, I think now is a good time to start a similar weekly post here.

Reviews: Embroidered Bellflower Dress, Bow-Back Shift, Two-Tone Halter Dress, South Shore Dress, Utility Shirtdress

Thursday, March 3, 2016

Hmm, the model wonders...is there such a thing as owning too many dresses?
I hope not, especially when there are dresses as pretty as
the Embroidered Bellflower Dress ($228) to join my closet!

March is dress month at Anthropologie and I'm here to give my thoughts on as many as I can try on! In case you missed them last week I tried on several dresses in this post; another dress reviews set is coming hopefully this afternoon but if not then very soon. We'll also review tops and bottoms soon.

Anthropologie says: Shipping's on us for the next 48 hours! + new sale items?

Wednesday, March 2, 2016

Well isn't this a delightful little treat? Anthropologie is offering Free Shipping on all orders for the next 48 hours! No minimum purchase required, no code required either. Please note that furniture orders are excluded from this promo.

Perhaps it's time to buy all of the pretty dresses we talked about yesterday? No, you're right, that'd be ridiculous. Maybe just 7 or 8. =)

I'm also receiving word that there are new sale items today -- my work schedule prevents me from listing all the highlights today but the fresh cuts section is updated!! And this is wonderful, I see the extra 30% off all sale clothing and accessory items promotion is still running! Use the code XTRA30 at checkout.

Here are a few of my wishlist items that got marked down:
Bronzefield Maxi Skirt (now $90), Style No. 4120580811000
Fringed Wool Pencil Skirt (now $400), Style No. 4120379620010

March is for dresses!

Tuesday, March 1, 2016

Anthropologie is unleashing its largest dress collection ever,
including beauties like the Two Tone Halter Dress ($178).

For Spring 2016, Anthropologie is pulling out all the stops. Long known for its beautiful spring dresses this year brings a bountiful bevy of frocks to choose from. The drool has been pretty much non-stop for me over the last couple of weeks as Anthro has slowly debuted dress after dress; now that March is finally here I can officially say that this is the best month ever! Sure to inspire closets filled anew with tons of dresses for now and ever.

I'm delighted by so much about this collection. Besides its sheer size, I love that Anthropologie's design team has thoughtfully catered to every strata of its clientele, from the office girl to the jet-setter to the offbeat dresser to the more traditional fit-and-flare girl. Nevermind that I just happen to be every single one of those things myself! (I know you probably are too, at times.)

So my wishlist looks a little like a 5-year-old's Christmas list right now...I want one of these beautiful laser-cut draped dresses and one of those botanical midi pretties and one of these silk frocks for good measure.

Inside, pretties you may have seen and pretties you may have missed. And then tomorrow, reviews!
