Playing the Sale Guessing Game

LADIES, I would like to call to your attention that another blog is taking every item you've helpfully listed and copying it and posting it as their own information. This has been going on for months and I am sick and tired of it. Please tell Elizabeth that copying this community's hard work is NOT OK.

Rumor is that markdowns will be on Wednesday this week, not Tuesday. But just in case it's time to play the Sale Guessing Game! Most of the items I'm waiting to see on sale are out of cycle right now. It would be cool to see the Gather Together Clutch ($158) hit sale...hint hint! Kim from Anthroholic might be scoping out the scene and be sure to come back here for the full list once the sale items appear on Anthro's website.

This post is no guarantee that any of these items will actually be on sale come tomorrow. What are you hoping to see? What do you think will/won't go on sale? If you see an item on sale today please let us know so I can update the list. If you're looking for reviews of any of these items, use the "Search the Archives" box in the sidebar.

Presenting the Birthday Haul!!

This is one of my favorite posts each year -- the chance to share what I got with my Anthropologie birthday discount. I did quite well for myself this year and I should warn you that opponents of consumerism should look away. I did my best to support the economy this time around! Although in reality I only spent about $50 of my own money. My friends and family assumed (correctly) that I'd want lots of Anthro gift cards. So I saved most of the gift money I'd gotten for Hanukkah and Christmas and had a few more to add come January 22nd.

And those boxes above? The kindness of friends of family...and a couple of charge/sends. I feel so loved! Thanks to everyone for all the birthday goodness. I should note that I acquired a few of the items I was pondering at the beginning of the month outside of the birthday haul, like the Macchiato Jumper and the Geology Clutch. This post is about what I got as part of the official excursion. On to the haul!

...and another pair of tights, another set of earrings, plus a blazer on the way. Whew. I'm exhausted. You've already seen one of the OOTDs above and the rest will get their own posts too.

I feel like I really got my gift cards' worth out of the birthday haul this year. As you know I was thoroughly disappointed with Anthro's January arrivals. I was flipping through the January 2008 catalogue (one of my all-time favorites) the other day pining for better times -- it used to be that January really set the tone for Spring but now it's been reduced to "resort." Whatever.

Luckily, Anthropologie must have been going through some kind of warehouse audit this past month. I could not believe it when I scored a bunch of popbacks including a few from seasons long past. The entire outfit I bought above? It cost $90!! It was good fortune when everything shipped. And the weird thing is I still have about $150 left in gift cards, which I've decided to hold onto until something really wonderful comes along.

Really I could not be happier. It was fun (and a bit scary) to ignore my budget for a few days and splurge. My closet is just about complete at this point and I expect my spend total to go down by about half in 2011 as a result. With this wonderful haul behind me I feel satisfied with what I own and can focus on paying off the rest of my bills and starting to save for an apartment to call my own.

I hope you enjoyed the birthday haul! Any other January birthdays want to share what you got? February birthdays, what's on your lists?? Oh, and I have a giveaway or two coming up very soon. So the party's not over yet!!

Sticky: The weekend in-store community post

Note: New posts run below this one. There are a bunch already!

I have noticed a lot of community members sharing in-store deals and spots in the comments of various posts. Inspired by the weekly Seek & Find posts started by the lovely Alexis over at J.Crew Aficionada, I think now is a good time to start a similar weekly post here.

This post is for community members to trade information. You can ask for help in finding an item, report back on what you saw in-store at your local Anthro, ask general questions, make a request, or just stop by to say hello. I love how helpful this community can be! Please note that items for sale belong in the Trade Market, as do 'looking to find' requests for past season items. Comments that erroneously get posted in this thread will be deleted.

Some FAQs....
- What does "sub" mean?It means that people are subscribing to the comment thread. You can do this by either clicking the small RSS icon at the top right of the comments section or by selecting either subscribe to "all new comments" or "replies" in the comment box in the comment form.
- Someone in the comments said they wanted to buy an item from me, but it's been x hours and I haven't heard squat. What should I do?I give people 24 hours for the benefit of the doubt. After that move on to the next person that contacted you.
- Someone said they returned an item at the store 20 minutes ago but I just called the store and it's gone. What gives?!?
A store associate might have taken a fancy to it or a customer might have grabbed it. Maybe it's just at the bottom of a big ol'pile. Unfortunately, you're out of luck.

Reviews: Silk Blooms Eternal Top, Les Fleurs Rouges Top, Delicate Corps Blouse, Freckled Blouse, Cross-Back Blues Top

Thank you for the fantastic layering idea, Anthropologie.

More flowy tops in this reviews set. I want to begin with a bit of a disclaimer...as I've stated (and will continue to state) this super flowy shapeless shape doesn't really work on me and my reviews will reflect that in the scoring. However, this doesn't mean that you should ignore these pieces altogether! We're all made of different curves and so if these tops look great on you don't let my reviews hold you back from purchasing them. Additionally, please don't be offended if I'm harsh on an item. I buy items that have one star for designs sometimes too -- we all have different shapes, we all have different tastes. Case in point: later this week I'll have an OOTD with a top that averaged two-star reviews on Anthro's site. But guess what? I don't care, because I love it.

On to the reviews!

Silk Blooms Eternal Top ($88) by Fei, TTS
style #20402616, blue motif (049) or sky (045)
★★☆☆☆

This reviews set is all about the differences between shapeless flowy and shapely flowy. We begin with the shapeless option -- Fei's Silk Blooms Eternal Top ($88). I loved the print of the blue motif version immediately so hope springs eternal that this top would somehow work on me. In store, I admired the vibrant colors that are splashed across this blouse but was impressed that it still feels like a winter top.

Taking the flowiness into consideration I decided to try on my true size 6. While the top was very loose on me I don't think a 4 would have maintained the correct shape. So I'll say this top is TTS. Unfortunately, the blue motif made me want to play Canasta or Shuffleboard and maybe die my hair blue. Anyone with a larger chest will likely have the same issue that I did: this top finds the largest part of you and hangs down from there. I felt like I looked three times bigger than normal, which is a pretty impressive feat. I would love to see this print on another top.

Later in my Anthro store rounds, I tried the other print (sky) not realizing it was the same top...

...and while we still have the same shapeless issues, I like this version a lot better. I'm still not in love with the top but the more modern abstract leaf print on this version seemed to trick the eye into streamlining me more. The collarless v-neck lends a casual feel to this top and the drop sleeves feel lazy. I have a feeling that come 90 degree weather something like this would be fun to wear. This version helped save the shirt from no stars. I liked it enough to bump my rating up to 2. I might consider the sky version on 3rd cut but I am not into it otherwise. Pass.

Les Fleurs Rouges Top ($148), size up if busty
style #20042917, red motif (069)
★★★★☆

Leave it to Anna Sui to show that tops can be flowy and still have a shape. The beautiful Les Fleurs Rouges Top ($148) has a print that is kind of tempting online but truly alluring in real life. I kept telling myself no, this top will not work on you, but every time I saw it on a dress form I liked it a bit more. Finally I could resist no more. A SA recommended that I size up in this top which was good advice.

I tried on an 8, one size up from my usual but two sizes up from what I usually take in Anna Sui. This helped me set the waist lower and helped the overall look of the top. It's crafted from beautiful silk and is sheer, so you'll need to layer something below it. The front has a soft diagonal seam that seemed unnecessary to me but it does not detract from the overall look. Perhaps the most interesting feature is the attached back cape which you can see better in this detail shot below.

Hmm. I have always wanted to be a superhero. Maybe this could be part of my vacation costume? That way the baddies know I'm still super, even when on a speedboat tearing it up between two islands chasing after criminals. Or maybe I could wear this for my 70s revival trio. I imagine the cape would do beautiful things on stage as I swing my arms to and fro in time with the music.

I'm making fun of the cape but in truth I don't hate it. I do think it puts this top smack in trendy territory which limits its longevity. For that reason, I will wait until sale to consider this top. And like with the Silk Blooms Eternal top reviewed above, I would not mind seeing this print in another incarnation. Wishlisted in an 8 for now.

Delicate Corps Blouse ($88) by Maeve, size up for hips
style #20291035, gold (070) or sky (045)
★★★★☆

I love it when military gets softened with feminine touches. Maeve's Delicate Corps Blouse ($88) is a perfect example of this. I think Anthropologie did a fantastic job on this top and I like that there's a more obvious military color with the sky and a more subtle version in the gold. Plus yellow is one of my favorite colors and this blouse immediately brightened my mood. The shoulder epaulettes are without a doubt executed to perfection.

I sized up to an 8, noting the straight cut of this top. Unfortunately even that didn't seem to help much -- the bottom button was pulling. So I left it undone for these photos and knocked a star off my rating. I'll likely have to size up to a 10 in this top and get it tailored, which leaves me seriously grumbling. The abandonment of curves continues in Anthropologie's design room and it fucking sucks.

Fit issues aside I found this top to be wonderful. The front pockets and button choice add to the military feel without being overt about it, and the front darts would make this top a perfect fit if only the bottom was a bit more a-line. Sigh. Love this top but the fit issue has me pretty mad. And it is dry clean only. Wishlisted for now.

Freckled Blouse ($98) by Moulinette Soeurs, TTS but short
style #20294138, navy (041)
★★☆☆☆

Here's a top that looks beautiful online but didn't work out in real life. The Freckled Blouse ($98) by Moulinette Soeurs is a georgette top that feels surprisingly rough to the touch. I love the way the front ruffles are pinned and tucked ever so slightly. In-store I knew right away the length would be an issue.

I grabbed an 8 to try initially hoping for more length but it was just too loose. So I went to my usual 6 which you see on me in the photos above. The fit is still somewhat off -- I need the waist to come in a little more and two or three additional inches of length. If I could have those elements fixed the top would fit perfectly and the front ruffles would flatter. Instead this top is kind of a mess on me. Too bad, because the print is pretty and I love the front ruffle. The idea has me swooning but the execution once again falls far short of my expectations. It's aggravating. Back to the rack.

style #20053583, blue motif (049)
★★★★☆

Annoyed with blouses, I turned to a tee for my last top of this set. Tiny's Cross-Back Blues Top ($89) has an odd price point ($89, not $88?) and a funky look to it. If this is what Anthropologie does with its fabric remnants, bravo! The top has a cotton base with two different silk patterns on it. I love that this top is slightly longer in the back. I found it to feel very comfortable and it didn't look like wings from the front. Because really, the tush does not need wings! Another well-executed detail are the shoulders. With straight-cut shoulders my neckline looks broad, and I feared little flutter tips on this shirt. But it has neither. The roll shoulder is just long enough to hew everything in nicely.

My usual size medium fit well. I have one quibble: I wish the floral panel got a bit more narrow at the bottom of the shirt to help the eye shrink the hips. But the top is fine as it is and quite pretty on. I love the model shot at the top of this post because it shows a way to let this top peek out without making it the main star. Great styling idea! Also, this top looks really cool from the back...

...all of which adds up to a winner in my book. Except of course for the price. Wishlisted to wait this one out for sale.

OOTD: Feeling Fresh

2011-01-25_005

Happy Saturday! I'm looking forward to a relaxing weekend. Sometimes you just want to wear a dress. And sometimes you just want to wear a nightgown. Anthro gave me the best of both worlds with their Hanging Hibiscus Chemise. As I noted in my review it's too pretty to just wear around the house. So I made up my mind to wear it around town for a day thanks to the help of some leggings, some warm socks and a nice, thick sweater. Normally I wouldn't advocate wearing sleepwear outside the house. But this one is close enough to a dress that few people notice the difference.

All in all the experiment worked out very well I'd say. I grabbed the chemise on sale making this outfit quite the steal. I played with both the grey and the brown tones in the chemise by mixing grey, black and brown into this look. (And one chunky gold necklace). I think Anthropologie is catching on to our little loungewear as weekendwear game, as their latest releases seem more dresslike than ever. I previously wore the sweater as part of this OOTD set.

I got my hair cut and treated this week and it has made such a difference! I was edited my last OOTD when I realized that things had gotten out of control on top of my head. I'm wary these days about cutting my hair because I'm still working to grow it out. But my stylist was wonderful and chopped off less than an inch while adding back the layers I needed around my face. Feeling a bit better about how things looked from the neck up, I decided this look was the right one to showcase NARS's Zambeze Matte Lipstick. I love this color so much! It pops up my plum lips to a deeper red. Attention-grabbing but at a snap rather than a boom.

OOTD: Boldly Drenched

2011-01-23_008

We're getting back into the outfit of the day swing of things! I thought it was hysterical how so many of us wore our Drenched Helenium Tees the other day -- we're truly kindred spirits! I love winter but even I know that the shorter days and general dreariness outside can get to people. So a bold floral is just the thing to lift my spirit. The last couple of weeks were so cold in the city that I just reached for my warmest sweater over and over again. Now that it's warmed up a bit I can put some thought back into my outfits.

My Birthday Haul is coming up for your review next week but in the meantime this outfit contains a preview of sorts. I had been not-so-secretely oohing and aahing over the Lace Lover's Booties ($138) from Farylrobin. I was quite pleased when they were one of my presents! The lace is shocking white at the moment but I think it will wear into a lovely antiqued look. They're super comfortable and are seem to be well-made. Time will tell. Farylrobin is located in the same building in NYC where I used to work during one of the best years of my life. I think as a result I have a bit of a nostalgic fondness for the brand.

While my legs are not the ideal shape for this type of shoe I find using a similarly-colored pair of tights helps to pull everything together. The skirt, a couple of years old from J.Crew, is a versatile piece I've previously worn in this OOTD roundup post and this one. My cardigan is also from J.Crew (previously worn here) and you'll see it again in another outfit soon. I couldn't resist buying a dream cardigan even though the material is crap. Mine is already pilling up. You just can't beat the colors. I wish someone else would get a clue so I could upgrade the quality!

My favorite part of this outfit however are the earrings! They're the Dangling D'Anjou earrings, which I have wanted since they first came out in 2008. I kept them on my wishlist (you know, just in case) and miraculously a pair popped back earlier this month -- as in this year, 2011! Where these appeared from I have no clue but I am so happy I managed to grab them. The large green pears really bring out my hazel eyes. It was meant to be, a little birthday nudge from Anthro to me. My ring is similarly fab, but I'll wait to tell its tale in another post.

If you want to see more OOTDs, you can either search the tag or hit up my flickr sets here and here.
