Reviews: Around the World Dress, Arribada Current Dress, Drifting By Dress, Optical Illusion Dress

The photo above is an apt visual description of the weather in NYC this past weekend. It delayed and eventually canceled a planned trip to SXSW and has turned my hair into a crazy, tendrilled mess. Even my iPhone was feeling mopey given its random music choices. It was perfect shopping weather though -- none of the stores were very crowded because everyone wanted to stay in. Great time for reviewing.

I've been waiting what seems like forever for the Around the World Dress ($168) to be out on the rack. My friend who works at one of the local Anthros told me they just took this one back out of the back, cough cough wink wink. It's a January release so could it be going on sale tomorrow? Or is it just getting a more prominent placement now that spring is nearly upon us?

This Floreat frock is pretty awesome. I tried on my normal size 8 and had no problem zipping it up. The linen is nice and sturdy and this dress is pretty supportive. The bust area is a bit see-through so pale blue bras are not recommended. I would have liked this dress better if the skirt were steamed. What a rumpled mess. No matter though -- this one has made the wishlist.

Moulinette Soeurs, I give up. I am waving the sizing consistency white flag. Please explain to me why an 8 was too tight in the Traversing Dress ($148, review here) yet a 6 in the Arribada Current Dress ($138, above) was much too loose. I guess you inherited whatever sizing issues Maeve was having last season. Frustrating. I would have to size down to a 4 to buy the Arribada.

It's clear that deep v's are the cut du jour at Anthropologie. Done correctly this cut is so flattering but it's hard to make the same tailoring work for a B cup and a D cup. The top was too big in the 6 for me so it was revealing too much for day. This dress is really pretty though. I love sea turtles (mate) and the color is beautiful. Not sure I'd get much use out of this dress in NYC. Seems much more west-coast or south oriented. Wishlisted for sale time.

I'm sure you've seen the Drifting By Dress ($168) on a zillion blogs by now. I was hoping the opportunity to try it on would help me like this one better -- I feel nuts that I'm not feeling it. I like that this dress has a younger style to it but with a better length than department store frocks. I tried on a size 8 which is what I normally wear in Burlapp and one size up from my true size.

While beautiful on I have to say my mind isn't really changed. I'm thoroughly annoyed that the model shot conceals the fact that the shoulders are sheer. The look itself is kind of cool though impossible to wear a strapped bra with. That automatically disqualifies this as a full-price buy for me. I think my biggest issue with the dress is the color. I'm glad Burlapp didn't do white because that would have looked too confectionery. But the nude tone isn't really working for me either. Too close to my summer skin shade. Complete meh. Back to the rack, maybe right on sale.

Burlapp is also responsible for the Optical Illusion Dress ($188) you see above. The brand does party dresses very well, especially ones with huge flowers along the waistband. I grabbed my usual size 8 for this brand. This neckline is about as deep as deep vs get. I have a bra that I think would work with this dress but the one I was wearing was leaving too little to the imagination for my taste. The back is equally low-cut making it difficult to wear a bra at all.

For me, the optical illusion is inverse to how I'd want it. Instead of darker concentration at the waistline I'd like to see it down towards the hem of the dress. I actually own a dress with the same dot pattern from Express that's from a few years ago. That gave me a good chuckle. I like this dress but the bodice keeps it from being a full-price buy for me. I understand the desire to cater to different body shapes so I won't knock Anthro too hard here but if all their dresses become impossible to wear a bra with there will be hell. To. Pay.
